As a Visitor Services Representative at the Nasher Museum of Art, you'll play a vital role in creating meaningful connections between visitors, art, and culture while serving as a welcoming ambassador for one of the nation's leading university art museums.

The Nasher Museum is known for its internationally recognized exhibitions, diverse collections, and commitment to accessibility, education, and community engagement. In this role, you'll work alongside museum professionals, educators, and event teams to ensure every guest enjoys an exceptional and inclusive experience.

Whether greeting first-time visitors, assisting community members, supporting educational programs, or helping facilitate special events, your contributions will help bring art to life for audiences from around the world.

What You'll Do

 

Deliver an Exceptional Visitor Experience

  • Welcome and engage museum visitors with enthusiasm, professionalism, and knowledge of exhibitions, programs, and events.
  • Serve as a trusted resource by providing information about museum offerings, policies, and visitor services.
  • Create a positive and inclusive environment for guests of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Assist visitors with accessibility accommodations and mobility needs, including transportation support using the museum golf cart.
  • Respond to phone inquiries, assist walk-in groups, coordinate visitor requests, and communicate VIP visits to museum leadership.
  • Represent the museum with professionalism, hospitality, and a commitment to excellent customer service.

Support Front-of-House Operations

  • Execute daily opening and closing procedures to ensure a welcoming and well-prepared museum environment.
  • Accurately track visitor attendance and admissions using AudienceView and other museum systems.
  • Collect visitor feedback and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Remain informed about exhibitions, events, tours, and operational updates to provide accurate visitor information.
  • Maintain an organized, professional visitor services area and support efficient daily operations.

Inspire Engagement Through Learning and Programs

  • Promote museum tours, exhibitions, educational programs, memberships, and community initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing training, exhibition learning opportunities, and professional development activities.
  • Collaborate with Education, Development, Marketing, Community Engagement, and Visitor Services teams to enhance the visitor experience.
  • Support guided tours and educational experiences for individuals and groups when needed.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment focused on service, learning, and community impact.

Support Special Events and Public Programs

  • Assist with reservations, facility rental inquiries, and event logistics.
  • Provide front-line support during public programs, special events, donor gatherings, and community-facing activities.
  • Help ensure smooth and memorable event experiences for visitors and stakeholders.

Contribute Beyond Your Role

  • Support special projects and additional duties that further the mission of the Nasher Museum and Duke University.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic museum environment, including evening, weekend, holiday, and special event support.

 

What You'll Bring

 

Required Qualifications

Education/Training

  • Work requires a knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles to perform routine clerical/office support duties normally acquired through a high school education.
  • A current driver’s license is required and must successfully pass an MVR check

 

Experience

  • None required above minimum education/training requirement.
  • One year of customer service experience preferred.

 

Skills:

  • This position requires frequent evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with sensitivity and respect for people from different cultural backgrounds.
    • Proficiency in Mandarin and/or Spanish is a plus
  • Strong customer service/hospitality experience is preferred.
  • Awareness of accessibility needs and accommodations, ensuring barrier-free access.
  • Ability to proactively anticipate and address problems and challenges.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs of the museum and guests, and to remain calm, flexible, and resourceful in high-pressure situations.
  • Experience using personal computers with a strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, Audience View and other software
  • Basic data entry skills. Ability to verify written information against existing records and make basic arithmetical calculations. Tabulate and post data in record book, copy data and assist in the compilation of records or reports.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.00 to USD $24.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
